fire brick

Fire bricks, also known as refractory bricks, are designed to withstand contact with hot metal or the hot torch.  Often used to line fireplaces and kilns, they make good surfaces upon which to put metal pieces during practice welds.  They are densely packed, moisture free and resistant to explosion.  At the same time, their thermal conductivity is low, so they are thermally efficient (good at preventing heat transfer).
