backfire

Backfire is when the flame goes out with a loud pop or series of pops. It sounds like exploding firecrackers and results from gasses exploding in the tip of the torch. It can send molten metal flying. It has any number of causes, including overheating the tip, operating a torch at lower pressures than required for the tip, touching the tip against the metal, or an obstruction in the tip.
